"A
Christmas Carol " by Charles Dickens
A Christmas Carol
Ebenezer Scrooge
is a mean old man. He lives in London and he is a businessman.
He hates Christmas because he thinks that Christmas is a humbug
so he doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas with his family.
But on Christmas
Eve, three spirits visit him. The first of the spirits of Christmas
Past, they go to the past and Scrooge and the spirit see the last
Christmas when Scrooge liked it.
After the
spirits of Christmas Present appears. With the spirit Scrooge
walks along the streets in London, and he sees, his clerk. He
is celebrating Christmas with his family, they are poor but they
are happy together although Bob´s son Tiny Tin is ill.
Then Scrooge
is visited by the spirits of Christmas Future . The spirit shows
him the future ,Tiny Tin is dead and Scrooge is dead too, he sees
a grave with his name, but nobody remembers him as a good person.
With the spirits
Scrooge thinks and he says that he will keep Christmas in his
heart. At the end of story Tiny Tin doesn’t die and Scrooge is
a kind person, he helps the poor, and he always celebrates Christmas
with his nephew.
PERSONAL
OPINION
This book
is a fantastic Christmas story. In this book Christmas is a happy
time when the people eat with the family. But actually we spend
much money. We are very generous at Christmas, but why aren’t
generous every year?
My favourite
character is Scrooge’s nephew, Fred. Although his uncle doesn’t
want to celebrate Christmas, he always invites his uncle. Fred
is very kind, funny and he loves his family. He is a good character!
But I don’t like Scrooge although he changes, he is mean, moody
and he doesn’t love his life.
I like this
book, it is reason, and Dickens writes very well this novel, he
describes London and the poor of the time, XIX. In this time the
life was very difficult for people.

Ebenezer
Scrooge is a mean, miserable, cross old man. He doesn´t love anybody,
he hasn´t got any friends, nobody is
good enought for him. But he is happy, that is what he wants.
The
night before Christmas day, his dead partner´s ghost, Jacob Marley;
appears and it says to him: “If you don’t change yourself, you´ll
finish like me, unable to have a good die. This night, three spirits´ll
come here, one after other, and they´ll teach you the lesson you´ll
never forget”.
The
first one is the ghost of Christmas Past, he shows Mr Scrooge
how he was when he was a child, and his bad behaviour in Christmas.
The
second one, the ghost of Christmas Present, shows him how happy
people are in Christmas, although they are poor.
The
third one, the ghost of Christmas Future, shows him his future
life if he doesn´t change.
After
that, Mr. Scrooge decides to change and become the perfect man.
PERSONAL OPINION
I
like very much this book because it is a history that never ends,
every year an Mr Scrooge appears, and fortunatelly, some “spirits” teach
to him the good of life.
I
think it is a book where people can find the real sense of Christmas.
My
favourite character was Bob Cratchit. He is a man who knows to
be good when things go bad, and he loves so much his family although they
are lots of problems.
This
book has diferents versions, nowadays it still copying. I´d recommend
it , I think people should read it.

It was Christmas Eve, at three o´clock in the afternoon,
and in London
it was very cold and almost dark.
On top of the door of an office in the centre of London, there were two names
painted: Scrooge and Marley. Jacob Marley had died seven years
ago.
Scrooge wasn´t friendly and kind, he didn´t say hello
to anybody when he was walking through the street,
…
He didn´t have friends. Nobody visited him.
Scrooge thought Christmas was humbug.
He was working in his office with his clerk, Bob Cratchit.
At that moment Scrooge´s nephew appeared to invited
him to his house on Christmas Day, but Scrooge refused the invitation
and said goodbye to his nephew. Later a gentleman came into the
office and asked for money for the poor people
who lived in prisons and workhouses, but Scrooge said goodbye
to him and the gentleman left.
Then Scrooge decided to close the office and Bob and
he went home.
In Scrooge´s house, suddenly Jacob Marley´s ghost appeared
next to the fire and told Scrooge that the three other ghosts
were going to appear that night. The Ghost of Christmas Past,
The Ghost of Christmas Present and The
Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. They were going to help him to
be good and kind to other people so they could rest in peace,
not like Marley.
The Ghost of Christmas Past showed Scrooge how was Christmas
when he was a teenager and why he became sadder. He had a girlfriend
and he left her and he became an old and mean man who was only
interested in the money.
The Ghost of Christmas Present showed him how was Christmas
in the present, but in other places of different families: The
Cratchit´s house, Fred´s family and more. He saw how poor people
could be happy with very little money. Here he started to have
feelings looking at Bob´s life and the problem of his son, Tiny
Tim.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come
showed him how his future would be.
Scrooge saw himself in his future grave and he realised
nobody went to his funeral, because the people hated him.
At that moment he promised the latest ghost that he was
going to change. And he was a changed man because he gave money
for poor people, …
PERSONAL OPINION
I liked this story because it´s related to these days
(Christmas Holiday) and it´s a very interesting story to amuse.
We also can know some customs about English people at
Christmas: the parties, the food, …
It´s also important to mention the author of the story,
Charles Dickens, for his great relevance in the English Literature.
My favourite character, in this story, is Scrooge (the
main character), because, in my opinion, he´s the realest character
in the story and we can see how a sad and mean person can become
a good, kind and generous person with the sweat of his brow.
I don´t like very much Belinda (Bob´s wife) because she´s
a plane character and she´s very bossy with her husband and she
didn´t want to give another opportunity to Scrooge and everyone
deserves a second opportunity.
I advise this book because it´s a good method to learn
English and it´s very interesting.

Plot:
Ebenezer Scrooge was a rich man, but he was a mean, old man. He
hated Christmas, and he hated that people said " Merry Christmas"
too. On Christmas Eve his nephew invited him to the Christmas´
dinner, but Scrooge answered that he didn´t go to dinner.
His business´ partner , Marley was dead so Scrooge continued
with the business alone. He was a hard, clever, mean and old man.
People were afraid of him.
His clerk Bob Cratchit had a lot of children with his wife. Although
Bob worked for Scrooge, he paid Bob a little, consequently bob
was poor and his younger son was ill because Tiny Tim (his son)
needed to eat more. If Tiny Tim didn´t eat more, he would
die.
The night of Christmas´ Eve Scrooge went home and saw Marley´s
ghost. Marley´s ghost said to him "If you don´t
change you´ll die alone. Three spirits will come. The first
spirit is going to come at one o´clock tonight, the second
spirit at the same time the next night, and the third spirit at
midnight the following night.
The first spirit showed him the past (his sister,
).
The second spirit showed him the present (his nephew, Bob´s
family, Tiny Tim,
).
The third spirit showed him the future (Scrooge died alone, Tiny
Tim died too and bob´s family were crying
).
When Scrooge got up he didn´t know which day it was, but
later he knew that it was Christmas. He was happy because he could
change the future and he wanted it. Scrooge began to like Christmas.
He opened the window and he said to everybody "Merry Christmas".
Scrooge bought a big turkey and gave it to Bob´s family.
Finally he began to be kind with everybody, and he gave money
for people who were poor. He went to dinner with his nephew.
Characters:
Scrooge, his nephew, Marley´s ghost. The three spirits,
Bob´s family, Tiny Tim, bob.
Why do you
like the book?:
I like the book because it is interesting, and it has a good end.
I like it because it teaches us that we should be kind with other
people and that we should be more generous with poor people and
help these people.
